This summer, six corporations have come together to help a local family realize their dream of home ownership. For the months of July to September, EastLink, Emera, KPMG, RBC, Scotia Investments and Stewart McKelvey, along with Habitat for Humanity HRM, will be hard at work building a house on Larrigan Drive in Lower Sackville, NS. The build officially kicks-off today.
The home will ultimately belong to Karen Reid and her three children, who recently moved to Nova Scotia from Quebec and are currently living in an apartment.
“On behalf of our team, we are proud and excited to work with Habitat for Humanity to make the dream of home ownership a reality for the Reid-Sala family,” says Stewart McKelvey’s Halifax Managing Partner John Rogers, Q.C. “The employees of our sponsorship group are looking forward to making a lasting contribution to our community.”
In recognition of the importance of volunteerism and community contribution, the group of companies has named the future residence the “Atwood House”, after long-time Lower Sackville, NS resident George Atwood. A WWII veteran, Atwood is a lifelong volunteer, including former volunteer firefighter, member of the Sackville Chamber of Commerce and founding member of the Sackville Seniors Advisory Council, Sackville/Bedford Meals on Wheels Program and Sackville Winter Carnival.
Habitat for Humanity HRM is a community-based, non-profit organization with a mission to build affordable housing and promote homeownership as a means to break the cycle of poverty. Homeowner families are chosen based on the need for affordable housing, the ability to repay a Habitat, no-interest mortgage, and the willingness to partner with Habitat.
