In concert with The Housing Trust of Nova Scotia, the Province recently announced significant support for housing options for healthcare workers. An $8 million investment in transitional, modular housing projects will help provide housing for healthcare workers where limited options are available. Established in 2009, The Housing Trust owns close to 300 units and operates on a mixed-income model where affordable, and market rate, units are leased in the same building. With affordable housing being a complex and multi-layered issue, partnership models and funding for projects like these become increasingly important.

As a founding member of the Board of Directors of The Housing Trust, and the current Board Secretary, Halifax Partner Brian Tabor, K.C., is pleased to see this next evolution of the organization’s work. “Projects like these address more than gaps in affordable housing – they play a role in addressing a shortage in healthcare workers in communities that need them”, he continued by noting, “this announcement serves as further reinforcement that the non-profit sector can play an important role in addressing housing needs.”

With an extensive practice in real estate law, Brian has supported numerous clients in the acquisition and financing of real estate transactions. However, he understands the unique legal challenges of affordable housing in Nova Scotia, and has been able to lend his expertise to organizations like The Housing Trust in support of the development of important initiatives.

Brian also understands the value of mentoring other lawyers to support non-profit housing; Halifax Partner Matthew Newell joined the Trust at the outset as an advisor to the Board, and Assistant Secretary. Another of the Firm’s leaders in real estate law, Matt’s practice focuses on supporting clients through the full scope of real estate transactions. Matt is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Discovery Centre, and he recognizes the value of engaging with community groups across sectors. He notes, “whether in affordable housing or science and technology, partnerships with the non-profit sector are integral to developing strong and vibrant communities.”
