Two former Stewart McKelvey partners appointed to Order of Canada
The Honourable James Cowan, CM, QC, and The Honourable Donald Oliver, CM, QC, are among the 77 individuals to be appointed to the Order of Canada, as recently announced by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada. This designation, established in 1967, is one of Canada’s highest honours, and is given to those who have shaped their society through innovation, imagination and compassion.
Jim and Don, who both practiced in the Halifax office, were inducted for their community efforts and civic engagement. Senator Cowan, who retired from the Firm December 31, 2019, continues to champion human rights related to medically assisted dying, genetic discrimination and mental health, while Senator Oliver promotes inclusion and diversity in Canada, as an educator and active community member.
