Associate Joe Thorne quoted in Canadian Lawyer article on access to civil justice
Joe Thorne, St. John’s associate, is featured in the Canadian Lawyer article by Richard Foot, Hryniak two years on. This piece looks at how the substantial Supreme Court of Canada decision in Hryniak v Mauldin, January 2013, has impacted judges and counsel around the country.
Unlike some of the larger provinces such as Ontario, Alberta and Saskatchewan that have a greater demand for judicial resources and a higher volume of cases, Joe notes that, “there isn’t the same institutional problem with access to justice [in Newfoundland] … So there hasn’t been a cultural shift in the Atlantic provinces, post-Hryniak.” Although Hryniak may not have a direct impact on Newfoundland and Labrador, Joe believes that the, “overarching statements about accessibility, efficiency, and proportionality – those issues are important for every litigator in every jurisdiction.”
