Incoming articled clerks participate in ‘research-a-thon’ for refugees seeking asylum in Canada
Ria Guidone and Jessica Habet, two incoming firm articled clerks, were a part of the recent ‘research-a-thon’ for individuals looking to seek asylum in Canada, following the United States travel ban.
‘Research 4 Refugees‘ brought together students from 22 law schools across the country with the aim of creating overviews of signficiant and relevant legal documents that can be used by the Canadian Counsel for Refugees. Each participating school was assigned a different legal topic to research, so as to avoid duplicate information. When interviewed by CBC News, Ria, organizer of the Dalhousie University Schulich School of Law group, stated, “we’re looking into different kinds of legislative provisions, jurisdictional issues, jurisprudence and human rights law.” Upon hearing of this ban, Jessica knew something had to be done: “I think the law is extremely powerful in these situations because we’re dealing with an executive order and we’re trying to show that the rule of law exists. There’s due process for people.”
