Joe Thorne receives Early Career Achievement Award
St. John’s partner Joe Thorne has been selected as the recipient of the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador‘s Early Career Achievement Award. This recognition is given to an individual who has demonstrated excellence in their practice and dedication to the profession.
Called to the Ontario Bar in 2010 and the Newfoundland and Labrador Bar in 2013, Joe has a wide-ranging general commercial litigation practice, with a particular focus on insolvency/restructuring, insurance defence and municipal law. Throughout his career he has successfully argued before all levels of court in Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as the Federal Court of Canada, the Quebec Superior Court, the Ontario Small Claims Court, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Court of Appeal.
Joe has served as both a formal and informal mentor for a number of Firm associates and articled clerks over the years, and is an active member within the legal community. He has chaired the Firm’s Litigation Group in St. John’s since May 2020, has been an instructor at the Newfoundland and Labrador Bar Admission Course, and has held several roles at the Newfoundland and Labrador branch of the Canadian Bar Association. In addition, Joe has administered and volunteered with pro bono legal assistance clinics in both Newfoundland and Labrador and Ontario, to provide free legal advice to those in need.
